Yes, several real studies over the past few years have linked seeing or hearing birds to better self-reported mood, and at least one has tested it experimentally rather than just observed it. None of them claim birds cure anything. What they show, consistently, is an association between everyday encounters with birds and how people report feeling afterward, sometimes measured in the moment, sometimes across a study designed to isolate cause from coincidence.
The largest study: a smartphone in your pocket
The best-powered evidence comes from a 2022 study led by Ryan Hammoud and colleagues at King’s College London, published in Scientific Reports. Using the Urban Mind smartphone app, the researchers gathered 1,292 participants and 26,856 momentary assessments between April 2018 and October 2021, prompting people at random points in their day to report what they could see or hear and how they felt right then (Hammoud et al., 2022). Seeing or hearing birds was associated with improvements in mental wellbeing that the researchers found could last up to around eight hours, and the effect held both for participants with no diagnosis and for those diagnosed with depression.
The Urban Mind app that generated this data works by pinging participants’ phones at random moments and asking short, structured questions about their immediate surroundings and mood, rather than relying on people to remember and self-report after the fact. That design is part of why the sample is so large: the assessments accumulate quietly in the background of ordinary days rather than requiring a special outing or a lab visit.
That’s a real-world, self-reported measure, not a lab result, which is both its strength and its limit. It shows the association exists at scale, across ordinary days, rather than only under experimental conditions. It can’t, on its own, prove that the birds caused the better mood rather than simply accompanying it.
What happens in a controlled setting
For something closer to cause and effect, a separate 2022 study by Emil Stobbe and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, also in Scientific Reports, took the more controlled route. In a randomised online experiment with 295 participants, people listened to six minutes of either birdsong or traffic noise recordings, then completed the same wellbeing measures before and after (Stobbe et al., 2022). Participants who heard birdsong reported lower anxiety and paranoia scores afterward than those who heard traffic; the traffic-noise group’s depressive symptoms moved the other way. Because assignment to birdsong or traffic was random, this design gets closer to showing that the sound itself made the difference, rather than that people who already felt better simply noticed more birds.
It’s worth being precise about what that finding covers: self-reported mood, in healthy participants, immediately after a short listening session. It isn’t evidence that birdsong treats an anxiety disorder, and the researchers don’t claim that either.
Whether the watching itself adds something
A third piece, published in 2024 in the Journal of Environmental Psychology by M. Nils Peterson, Lincoln Larson and colleagues at North Carolina State University, asked a more specific question: does actively watching for birds add anything beyond a plain walk outside (Peterson et al., 2024)? College students were assigned to one of three conditions: a control group given no instructions, a group asked to take a regular walk at least once a week, and a group asked to take the same walk while noticing how many birds they saw along the way, logged through a phone app. The birdwatching group reported bigger gains in positive emotion and a larger drop in distress than either the plain-walk group or the control group. The authors are upfront that this is a pilot-scale study and call for larger, more diverse samples before the finding is treated as settled; it’s a genuine first result, not a final one.
What this doesn’t say
None of these three studies claim that birds or birdsong cure, treat, or prevent anxiety, depression, or anything else. They measure self-reported mood, over minutes or hours, in specific study conditions, and they say so themselves. Self-report is worth naming as a limit that runs through the whole set: every one of these studies asks people how they felt, rather than measuring something biological like cortisol or heart rate. That’s a real limitation, and a defensible one, since subjective wellbeing is, by definition, what a person reports it to be. What they add up to is more modest and, frankly, more credible: across a very large real-world sample, a tightly controlled sound experiment, and a small campus pilot, encountering birds keeps showing up alongside better self-reported wellbeing. Getting more of it
None of this requires travel or expertise, which is most of the point. A feeder within sight of a window, ten unhurried minutes, and the habit of actually noticing rather than just hearing background noise gets you close to the conditions these studies were built around.
