Does Watching Birds Make You Happier? What Research Shows

Two real studies, verified and cited, on birds and self-reported wellbeing. What the research actually found, and what it stops short of claiming.

The honest answer: several real studies have found that seeing or hearing birds is associated with better self-reported wellbeing, in the moment and sometimes for a while after. None of them show that birdwatching cures anything, treats anxiety, or works like a prescription. What they show is smaller and, if anything, more useful, because it’s the kind of finding you can act on this morning with a window and ten minutes.

The largest study: over a thousand people, tracked in real time

In 2022, a team led by Ryan Hammoud at King’s College London published a study in Scientific Reports using a smartphone app called Urban Mind. Over three and a half years, from April 2018 to October 2021, 1,292 participants answered short check-ins about their mood, wherever they happened to be, 26,856 assessments in total. Each check-in also asked whether they could currently see or hear birds.

The result: wellbeing scores were meaningfully higher at check-ins where people reported birds nearby, compared to check-ins where they didn’t. The lift carried into the next check-in too, smaller but still measurable, before fading out by the one after that. The finding held up in participants with a diagnosed depression as well as those without one, with no significant difference between the two groups. That’s an association measured in the moment, self-reported by the participants themselves, not a clinical outcome and not a treatment claim. Read the study in full.

The 2024 study: birdwatching against a plain walk

A separate question is whether birdwatching specifically adds anything beyond just being outside. In 2024, researchers led by Nils Peterson at North Carolina State University ran a small experimental study, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, that put this to a direct test. Over five weeks, 112 college student volunteers were split into a control group, a group assigned a weekly nature walk, and a group assigned the same walk while noticing and counting birds along the way using a phone app.

Both walking groups reported less psychological distress than the control group by the end, but the birdwatching group reported the larger swing: a self-reported wellbeing gain of about 1.6 points against roughly 1.1 for the plain nature walk, and a bigger drop in reported distress too. It’s a small, early study, not a definitive one, run on one campus over five weeks rather than a general population over years, and some participants assigned to the birdwatching group opted out before it finished. An older finding that still holds up

Neither of the two studies above was the first to notice this. In 2017, researchers from the University of Exeter, the British Trust for Ornithology, the University of Queensland and the University of Maryland surveyed 263 people across Milton Keynes, Bedford and Luton and found that lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress tracked with the number of birds people could see from home, particularly in the afternoon. Worth being precise about what it did and didn’t find: the effect tracked the number of birds visible, not the number of species, so it isn’t really a case for rare or exotic birds over common backyard ones. Why birds might be doing the work

Psychologists have had a name for part of this mechanism since long before any of the studies above: attention restoration. The idea, from Rachel and Stephen Kaplan’s 1989 work on the psychology of nature, is that certain kinds of attention are effortful and tiring, while natural scenes often offer what they called soft fascination, something interesting enough to hold the eye without demanding anything back. A bird working a feeder fits that description closely. It’s a proposed mechanism rather than a proven one, but it matches what the newer studies keep finding without needing the birds to be rare, expensive, or anywhere but the nearest window.

What this doesn’t prove

Worth saying plainly, since it’s easy for research like this to get flattened into a slogan: none of these studies show that birdwatching treats depression, reduces clinical anxiety, or replaces any kind of care. They show self-reported wellbeing, measured at a moment in time, moving in a consistent direction across different research groups and different methods. That’s a real and interesting pattern. It is not a medical claim, and nobody involved in this page is qualified to make one.

Getting more of the feeling

If the studies above are right about the mechanism, the practical version is almost insultingly simple: a feeder you can see from where you already sit, a few unhurried minutes a day, and something that deepens the noticing rather than rushing past it.
